ARTIST STATEMENT
My work is a gestural interpretation of my surroundings and inner curiosity. My goal as an artist is to embrace the beauty of lines as expression of shape, volume, and space.
With oil pastels, I am also exploring color, line, and texture. After an initial study on paper, I start with a bright gesture drawing and slowly mute it by filling it in and building up the form. I experiment with assorted color combinations and get a feel for what looks most appealing. I intermingle them with different methods of application, like scratching off a top layer to reveal the color below or using mineral spirits to dilute, remove, or blend the different hues of oil pastel to create textures impossible otherwise.
